How do I choose a filter for laboratory scale applications?
Since filtration and separation removes particles from a liquid or gas by passing it through a permeable material that makes up a membrane filter, the type of filter used will be determined by the specific application and testing procedures, as well as the performance and retention qualities required.
The first step in choosing the proper filter is to determine the particle size that you want to be retained or filtered. Membrane filters are rated according to pore size.
What is EIA?
EIA, or enzyme immunoassay, is a generic term used to refer to all ELISA-like assays including those designed to detect nucleic acid targets as well as antibodies or antigens

How many times can the Calyx Capsule be Autoclaved?
The Calyx Capsule can be autoclaved at 121¨¬C for up to five 30min cycles.
Does Osmonics carry filters in capsule configuration?
Yes, Osmonics produces Calyx brand capsule filters. These are disposable filtration units designed for the removal of particles or bacteria from aqueous or solvent solutions and gas streams. They are ready to use-liminating the need to disassemble, clean and reassemble filter housings.
In addition, Calyx capsules contain no glue or surfactants, and feature a serial layer filter design for increased throughput and extended life. Two upstream vents are included to facilitate venting in any position. All capsules containing membrane media are preflushed with 18-megohm water to reduce extractables.

Can PES membranes be used to filter hybridization probes?
Yes, Osmonics Cameo Syringe filters with PES membranes can be used to filter hybridization Probes. The sterile Cameo 25SS Syringe filter offers low protein binding and high flow through and low hold up volume. Which are essential in sterilization of hybridization probes.
Do you have Syringe filters that are suitable for use with HPLC Sample Preparation of strong acids?
Yes! Osmonics offers our Cameo 17F and 30F syringe filters with a Teflon filter and a polypropylene housing. The Teflon membrane is very resistant to most acids and solvents.
I have a low flow through rate with my syringe filters, what can I do to fix this?
Osmonics offers two ways to increase flow rates in syringe filters. We offer a 17 and 30 mm diameter Cameo, which has a larger surface area and thus a higher flow rate than our competitors. Also, these Cameo Syringe filters are available with a glass fiber prefilter. This will greatly increase flow through for more viscous fluids.
What is the Maximum operating Pressure for the Calyx Capsules?
The Maximum operating Pressure for the Calyx capsule varies with liquids and Gases.
¡Ü Liquids- 80 psi
¡Ü Gases- 55 psi
Both pressures are based on conditions at Room Temperature.
What is the charge on my Savur sterile analysis filters? Are the membranes positive, negative, or neutral in charge?
Both membranes are neutral in charge. That is, MicronSep (example: DFE02WPPS1) and NitroPlus (example: DFW04SGPS1) membranes are neutral.
We just purchased a Polysulfone (PS) Gravi-Seal unit. We want to use an electric sterilizer with dry heat. It goes up to 180F (82C) degrees. Can we? Will it melt out unit or damage it?
We tested it and it will definitely melt the stem. Do not use the higher temperatures. The PS may be autoclaved at 121 C at 15 psi for 20-30 minutes.
I am looking for a syringe filter for my HPLC sample and solvent. I need low protein binding for my sample. Which Cameo syringe filter should I use?
For your type of sample we offer the Cameo cellulose acetate (CA) or polyethersulfone (PES) for low protein binding applications. We have sterile or non-sterile syringe filters, with or without glass fiber for higher throughput or viscous samples.
For the solvents, we manufacture either the Cameo low extractable polypropylene or our TefSep PTFE disposable syringe filters.
The polypropylene and PTFE Membranes are both hydrophobic and work best with organic solutions; the cellulose acetate and polyethersulfone membranes, on the other hand, are hydrophilic and work best with water soluble solutions.
I need a filter for my HPLC samples. Which one should I use?
The most common product used for HPLC samples is our Cameo nylon syringe filter. For more viscous aqueous or organic samples, a glass prefilter with the nylon filter in a polypropylene housing is available.
We also offer the Cameo Cellulose Acetate syringe filters for aqueous solutions, protein-binding, biological fluids, serum or media additives. It is available in either sterile or non-sterile condition, with or without the glass prefilter.
Our Cameo polyethersulfone syringe filters, sterile or non-sterile, are also used for biological fluids, serum or media additives. This low protein binding filter is often used where quick flow rates and high throughputs are critical.
What are the Maximum filtration volumes for the Cameo 17 and 30mm Syringe filters?
The new Cameo 17 and 30mm syringe filters offer greater filtration volume than smaller filters.
¡Ü Cameo 17- 12ml
¡Ü Cameo 17 with glass fiber prefilter- 20ml
¡Ü Cameo 30- 120ml
¡Ü Cameo 30 with Glass fiber prefilter- 180ml
Do I need an MSDS with my purchase of Cameo syringe Filters from Osmonics?
Material Safety Data Sheets are not required to be sent with shipments of our Cameo devices. OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard does not apply to articles. An article is defined in the Standard as a manufactured item "...which does not release, or otherwise result in exposure to, a hazardous chemical, under normal conditions of use." The product in question fits the definition of article and as such does not require Haz-Com labeling or a Material Safety Data Sheet with shipment.
What Filter types are available in the Savur Funnel?
Osmonics Savur Analytical Funnels are available with three filter types:
¡Ü Magna Nylon
¡Ü MicronSep Mixed Cellulose Ester
¡Ü PolySep Polypropylene
What syringe filters does Osmonics offer for HPLC sample prep for organic and aqueous solutions?
Osmonics offers both a nylon and a polypropylene 17 and 30 mm Cameo syringe filter. Both are in a polypropylene housing and both are available with a glass fiber prefilter.
What is the maximum operating temperature for the 17 and 30mm Cameo Syringe filters?
The Cameo 17 and 30 mm Syringe filters have a polypropylene housing, which allows them to withstand higher temperatures than an acrylic housing. The Cameo 17 and 30's have a maximum operating temperature of 180¨¬C. They are also able to be autoclaved.
